Maintenance is where electric scooters really win. No oil changes, no V-belt replacements, no spark plugs, no air filters, no carburetor adjustments. What remains is tire pressure, brake pads, possibly a controller firmware update, and the annual MOT-equivalent check. Count on €80 to €150 per year for maintenance, as opposed to €250 to €400 for a petrol scooter.

In many municipalities, light mopeds are still permitted to ride on bicycle paths within built-up areas, but cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Rotterdam have abolished this for parts of their city centers. In these areas, light mopeds ride on the road at a maximum speed of 25 km/h. Third-party liability insurance is legally mandatory. If you also want coverage against theft and damage to your own scooter, choose WA+ or comprehensive insurance.
