How do you choose a foldable mobility scooter?

At a foldable mobility scooter It is all about the balance between weight, range, and comfort. Three questions will help you find the right model in five minutes:

1. How many kilometers do you drive per day? For short trips of 5 to 10 km, an entry-level model like the IVA Traveler 400 more than enough. If you want to be on the road for entire afternoons, choose a model with a larger battery such as the IVA Traveler 500 or the IVA Traveler 800, with a range of up to 30 km.

2. How often do you fold it in and out? If you get in and out of the car every day, it pays to choose a model with an automatic folding system. That reduces strain on your back and gets you on the road faster.

3. How much do you weigh and what do you take with you? Every IVA Traveler has a maximum permissible user weight. Include luggage, groceries, or a dog carrier in the calculation. If in doubt, choose a model from the higher segment — Traveler 600 or 800 — for extra load capacity and stability.

Lightweight, compact, and always with you — the benefits

A foldable mobility scooter transforms from a full mobility aid into carry-on luggage in a few seconds. This gives you three concrete advantages over a fixed mobility scooter:

1. You take it everywhere with you. In the trunk of a Volkswagen Polo. On the train to Amsterdam. In the cargo hold of a plane to Spain.A fixed mobility scooter requires a trailer or a special lift; a foldable model fits behind the seat in 30 seconds.

2. You hardly need any storage space. When folded, the IVA Traveler models are no larger than a pull-out suitcase. It fits behind a door, in the hallway closet, or in the shed — no separate storage needed.

3. You drive comfortably and fast. The batteries reach up to 10 km/h, the pneumatic tires absorb paving stones, and the handlebars are height-adjustable. No compromise on comfort, but much more flexibility.

For those who travel frequently, live in an apartment, or use their car often, that outweighs a few extra kilometers of range on a standard model.

Wmo, insurance and legislation for foldable mobility scooters

A foldable mobility scooter falls under the same rules as a stationary mobility scooter. Three things to know before you hit the road:

Wmo and PGB. Municipalities usually provide a fixed model via the Wmo. If you specifically want a foldable mobility scooter — for example, because you travel frequently — then apply for a Personal Budget (PGB). With a PGB, you purchase the model that suits you yourself and submit the receipts to your municipality. The rules are clearly explained on the website of the central government on the Wmo.

Compulsory insurance. Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for mobility scooters that travel faster than 10 km/h. All IVA Traveler models fall under this rule. In addition, take out comprehensive insurance for theft and damage — especially if you regularly take it with you on trips.

Traffic rules. On a mobility scooter, you ride on the bike path or sidewalk, depending on your speed. A helmet is not mandatory, but is recommended for long rides. You do not need a driver's license and can get behind the wheel from the age of 16 — handy if the grandchildren want to come along.

Frequently asked questions about foldable mobility scooters

What is a foldable mobility scooter?

A foldable mobility scooter is an electric mobility scooter that you fold into a compact package with just a few simple steps. As a result, it takes up little space and you can easily lift it into the trunk, onto the train, or even into an airplane's cargo hold. Ideal if you are often on the go or have limited storage space.

What is the best foldable mobility scooter?

The best folding mobility scooter depends on your range, the weight you want to transport, and your budget. The IVA Traveler series offers seven models between the € 1.099 and € 1.699, with a range of up to 30 kilometers, a quick folding system, and sturdy pneumatic tires. For most users, the IVA Traveler 500 is the sweet spot between price, range, and comfort.

What is the smallest foldable mobility scooter?

The smallest models fold down to under 30 kilograms and fit upright behind the driver's seat. Within the IVA Traveler series, the Traveler 300 is the most compact: it weighs less than comparable 4-wheelers and fits in almost any trunk.

What are the disadvantages of a foldable mobility scooter?

Folding mobility scooters compromise somewhat on range and seating comfort in exchange for portability. For long day trips of 40+ kilometers or heavy off-road conditions, you are better off choosing a fixed mobility scooter. For city trips, holidays, and shopping, a folding model is actually faster, lighter, and more flexible.

How much does a foldable mobility scooter cost?

A foldable mobility scooter costs on average between the € 1.000 and € 3.500. The IVA Traveler series is deliberately positioned in the accessible segment: starting from € 1.099 for the Traveler 400, until € 1.699 for the Traveler 800. You can find second-hand models starting from € 600, but pay close attention to battery condition and warranty.

Is a foldable mobility scooter reimbursed under the Wmo?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The Wmo (Social Support Act) looks at your individual situation and usually opts for a fixed model. If you specifically want a foldable one because you travel frequently or have limited storage space, apply for a personal budget (PGB) from your municipality. You can find more information on the page of the central government on the Wmo.

Do I need to insure a foldable mobility scooter?

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for mobility scooters that travel faster than 10 km/h. All models in the IVA Traveler series fall under this rule. Additional comprehensive insurance is advisable: it covers theft and damage, including while traveling.

Can I take a foldable mobility scooter on the plane?

Yes, in most cases. Virtually all airlines accept foldable mobility scooters with a lithium-ion battery of up to 300 Wh in the hold. Always register your mobility scooter at least 48 hours before departure and have the battery specifications at hand.
